How to Run a Nightclub

Four things to keep your nightclub running successfully.

The clubbing scene is the UK's cities are booming and there is a long history of several famous clubs and the people who attended them. As a well-established sector, there are a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs.

In order to keep your nightclub from losing money and closing its doors, you need to be able to have a clear plan for how you’re going to run it. Keeping a clear focus and knowing who you’re targeting is going to play a huge role in your nightclub’s success.

Opening the doors after years of dreaming can seem like the fun is about to begin but you will need to treat your nightclub as a business and not as a hobby!

Here are four things to consider when running a nightclub:

1. Create a clear concept

There are a lot of nightclubs that open but there aren’t as many that stay open. In order to make sure that you are one of the successful few, you need to create a clear plan of what it is that your club is about.

What is unique about your club that will bring people there over and above your competition? The best way to do this is to have a clear concept around which all decisions will be made.

Creating this concept will give your customer’s something to latch onto and give them a reason to come to your venue. It takes a lot of hard work to create a brand that resonates with consumers, though.

Once your club is up and running, even if the concept is a success, you will still have to keep your finger on the pulse and to refresh your concept so that you can make sure that it stays relevant.

In the UK, although big super clubs have been closing down, smaller, more intimate and niche specific venues have been thriving. This gives a lot of encouragement to small business owners with good ideas.

2. Limit your costs

Opening a nightclub can be an expensive task and, if you want to be a draw to customers, you probably won’t want to skimp on too much. One area that can help you to save money is to buy a space that was already a nightclub club so that you won’t have to put as much money into completely transforming a space.

There are a few ways that you can make your nightclub look fresh and new without pouring too much money in. Give the space a new coat of paint and recruit local artists to create visual elements in the space.

Consider themed nights to draw in a crowd. You can also do a lot of marketing through promoters who usually only work on a percentage basis, which is great for you.

If you are just starting out, buying a smaller venue is a good option. Smaller nightclubs are far more on trend with the UK's nightlife scene and you will be able to spend less to get it up and running.

3. Get a good team

Your business will be very dependent on the staff that you hire. You need to make sure that your staff are well trained and well looked after so that your customers benefit from their skills and their loyalty.

Dealing with drunk customers and working late hours can be a taxing job. Your employees will find it easier to be personable and efficient with staff if they know that their boss is in their corner.

4. Target your marketing

Keep promoting your club, even if you have a reliable client base. You need to make sure that you are always attracting new people to your venue. Keep it relevant so that people fill up your space night after night.

When you’re promoting, make sure that you are aren’t wasting money on marketing to people that aren’t your audience. If you know your concept, then you should know who your audience is and that is who you need to design your marketing strategy around.

If you have a smaller venue, you will better be able to target your specific audience.

Social media is obviously a great way to market your club affordably. It could benefit you to get influencers to come to your club and talk about it.

These would not have to be costly influencers with huge numbers of followers. You could get someone with 100k followers or so as long as they appeal to the demographic you want to market to.

Keeping these few things in mind should help you to run a successful nightclub but you will also need to put in a lot of time and a lot of research if you are going to make your business successful.

Finding the right venue is an important first step. The best way to do this is to keep up to date with the trends in the UK's nightclub scene.
