When it comes to flowers, South Africa has a huge variety of local species. The uniquely diverse climate means that there is an abundance of flowers and plants.

Due to the wide range of flower growers in the country and its neighbours, there is a good supply of stock. There is also, however, a lot of competition in the form of online options and supermarkets. 

If you are going to make your new business venture a success, you will have to carve out a niche and target the right customers!

Essential skills 

If you are thinking of buying a florist, you will need to have flower arranging skills. A natural creative aptitude is imperative and, on top of that, you should think of doing some classes or taking a course in flower arranging before you go into this business.

There are also plenty of books and online tutorials that can help you to brush up on your skills.

Other than that, you will also need to have basic business skills in order to keep on top of your business’s finances. Dealing with customers and, perhaps, the staff will necessitate some people skills.

Most importantly, you need to be prepared to work very early mornings!

Find a niche

Running a florist has its difficulties. One of the major difficulties is the short shelf life of your stock. You will need to move what you have quickly, or you will lose money.

Securing larger contracts that allow you to know exactly what kind of orders you have is a great way to keep your florist profitable. Weddings can form a large part of a florist’s business. You can also look for recurring orders with local hotels, restaurants or other businesses.

In order to stand out, you should also think carefully about what it is that your business does differently. Do you specialise in speedy deliveries? Are you going to be eco-friendly?

Choose your location carefully

Find a business that has a lot of foot traffic going past it so that you can draw customers in with your floral displays. You should also consider the online component of the business.

Large window displays or curb space for displaying your flowers are perfect for attracting customers. The visual appeal of your product is something that you should take advantage of. If you are going to do deliveries, there needs to space for a vehicle.

If you want to expand your customer base, there are also plenty of markets that you can sell your flowers and arrangements at. Renting a stall space can be a lot more cost effective than renting an entire shop space. 

Finding the right florist for you, though, will mean spending time looking at what is available. Try searching online for the widest results.
