The South West was one of 2019’s most hotly-contested regions in the Awards this year and the judges chose Pig and Olive for the way they support the local community, sustain the environment and promote healthy living.
Rufus Bazley, Director of Marketing at BusinessesForSale.com says, “2019 was a record year for Small Business Big Heart entries so achieving regional finalist position is incredible. Pig and Olive stands out amongst our regional finalists because the ethos of the founders, their staff, the food they produce and the people they cater for share a passion for people and the planet. I’d like to congratulate all the staff and wish them every success in the next and final round of judging.”
Director Simon Harris says, “We are completely stoked and chest-puffingly chuffed to be chosen as a regional finalist for this award. Kindness, community, ecology, healthy food and happiness are subjects very close to our hearts and are integral to our business. An award such as this is just as important to us as one for our pizzas, although that would be equally as cool! Thank you so much."
Pig and Olive, Westward Ho!, their original pizzeria, run a ‘bring your own’ policy and the ‘porkage’ fee charged here goes directly to local charity FIG (Families in Grief). They also support regular local beach cleans, and were chosen to be the proud guardians of a donated 2 Minute Beach Clean Board. They are also a plastic-free business.
Alongside the original business Pig and Olive has partnered with The Pig on the Hill and expanded its ‘porkfolio’ to include the refurbishment and joint-running of neglected a local pub, right in the centre of the village, The Pig on the Beach. They gave away over a hundred free pizzas when testing out the oven prior to the official opening, much to the delight of the local community!
Pig and Olive takes local sourcing to new levels: it sources all ingredients ethically and where possible locally as well as growing its own herbs hydroponically on its farm where it rears rare breed pigs. Pig and Olive then smoke the meat in their homemade smoker, and pull the pork at their farm too.
If Pig and Olive goes on to win the Small Business Big Heart Awards Gold prize it will receive £1,000 to donate to any good cause of its choice.
Pig and Olive is one of two finalists from the South West, the other is Elementa, a schools’ services business based in Weston Super Mare. This is the first year more than one finalist has been selected from the region, this is a result of a greater volume of entrants and a higher standard overall. In total there are 20 regional finalists across the country.
The overall winner of the 2019 Small Business Big Heart Award in association with BusinessesForSale.com will be announced on 15 September.
