Business description
Freehold St Nectans Glen
Hermitage, Waterfall, Tea Rooms and Fourteen Acres of Woodland

Unique Opportunity to Purchase a Piece of Cornish Heritage

We are led to believe that in 500AD St Nectan built a small sanctuary on what was an ancient sacred site beside a river, just above a beautiful waterfall. This is the only one in the world like it due to the formation that nature and time has provided. It is to be found in a beautiful valley near the Cornish coastline. St Nectan lived here in total seclusion until he passed away. It is said that his sisters came and took possession of the Chapel and following the wishes of the Hermit placed his remains in an oak chest with sacramental vessels and having diverted the course of the river buried him at the base of the waterfalls. Having done so the river was returned to its normal course and flows over the Saints grave. In due time the sisters also passed away and were buried together by the local inhabitants a short distance from the waterfall under a large flat stone.

The Chapel fell into disrepair until 1860 when a small cottage was built on the site. Though much extended, this remains in place today and is the private residence of the owners. It is next to the Tea Gardens where visitors can relax and enjoy the spectacular surroundings before walking down to the waterfalls. It has been a tourist attraction for as long as there has been tourists and notably Charles Dickens visited the glen in 1843. It is without doubt one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets.

The original hermits cell remains in place and visitors can spend time in quiet contemplation and meditation in the cell, which is the crossing point of three ley lines and therefore makes it a place of great spiritual significance. The site is listed in the top ten spiritual locations in the UK. The Kieve (Cornish for basin) has been a place of reverence, worship and healing since pre-Christian times. People of many faiths have walked the ancient route to the waterfall to bathe in its mysterious and therapeutic atmosphere.

The current guardians and owners of the Glen have developed the tea gardens and can cater for thirty covers at any one time. The business could be open for visitors every day of the year and is constantly busy with people of all creeds and interests who walk by the river up through the woods for approximately one mile to visit the attraction. Many are frequent visitors who come to sit quietly by the sixty-foot falls and absorb the atmosphere. Others bathe in the pool taking the waters that are reputed to have healing properties.

Access for the public is only by walking the one mile up the river valley. There is a rough track used by the owners that would not be passable without a four-wheel drive vehicle.

The black and white timbered cottage consists of a galley kitchen, shower room and loo, lounge and lounge dining room, single bedroom, one double bedroom leading to a conservatory, a utility room and an office area.

Outside there is a garden of circa one quarter of an acre containing a basic four berth chalet and conservatory, two green houses and a small orchard. There is also a three-acre field that is presently rented out to a local farmer

It would be quite possible to build an ecologically friendly house on the present site, retaining the remains of the chapel and hermits cell and without losing the historic significance of the location.

This is a life style opportunity for a couple or a family to buy, enjoy and take over as guardians of the Glen. As a purely commercial enterprise it is unlikely that a buyer would find it a viable opportunity.
