Women lead way as childcare bosses

Women are leading the way with buying their own businesses, especially nurseries and childcare services, according to a new study.

A BusinessesForSale.com survey, taken from 24,000 business buyers from its website from 2004, shows 20pc more women than men are leaving corporate employment to be their own bosses.

“Women want a business that is both challenging and rewarding, and this type of business [childcare and nurseries] provides them with just that,” said chairman Marcus Markou. “For many, the childcare sector also provides them with the opportunity to work from home, and as a result have more quality time with their own families.”

Tatjana Hine, president of the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAWE), said that the news was not surprising, given that childcare was something women knew well.

But she warned it was still difficult for women to get funding to start their own businesses.

“There are still problems across the board. It is still difficult to get funding from banks as they still see the family home owned by the man, not women, and therefore not a form of collateral.”

She added that many government schemes that help start-ups don’t mentor women to keep the business going. “Often only a majority succeeds beyond a few years because they don’t have the back-up,” she said.
