The beautiful rural town of Gatehouse of Fleet is situated in south-west Scotland astride the River Fleet which runs into the Solway Firth. The town was developed in the mid 18th century, much of it attributed to the entrepreneur James Murray who built a summer home (now the very well known Cally Palace Hotel). The town is within a “national scenic area” with an abundance of natural amenities for visitors including golfing, pony trekking, walking, mountain biking and fishing etc.

The town is situated close to the A75, a busy trunk road which leads from the M6 north of Carlisle to the ferry port of Stranraer and its links to Ireland. Gatehouse itself has a good selection of privately owned shops servicing the local community as well as tourists. There is also a monthly market and a primary school with secondary schooling at nearby Kirkcudbright.

The Ship Inn is situated on a prominent corner site in the centre of Gatehouse of Fleet close to the River Fleet and was extensively refurbished in 2005/06 to a very high standard achieving the only four star Inn rating in Dumfries and Galloway.

The main entrance is from the front of the building leading into the reception lounge with solid fuel burning stove, reception desk and office behind. Beyond this is the bar/ restaurant which can cater for up to 84 covers and is of a split level design with an additional snug area. The design and decor of the restaurant is in traditional style with feature wood burning stove, exposed brick columns and a large bar servery to one end.

For guests there are well appointed ladies, gents and disabled persons toilets directly off the bar.

There are 10 letting bedrooms available, all with ensuite facilities and all either double or twin rooms. Like the remainder of the Inn, the bedrooms and bathrooms have been refurbished to a very high standard and include Molton Brown products for guests.

Adjacent to the bar restaurant is a well equipped commercial kitchen offering a wide range of kitchen equipment. Other service rooms include a dry goods store, walk-in chill, beer cellar, staff w.c., etc.
