The Book Shop is located in the High Street in the busy town of Crediton, 5 miles west of
Devon’s county town of Exeter. Crediton is a quaint market town with a population of
approximately 8,300 and has many high street facilities with an excellent range of
independent shops as well as the chains including Wetherspoons, Tesco’s, Boots, all major
banks, various junior and senior schools, leisure centre and various clubs and societies.
Crediton’s history lies with “St. Boniface of Crediton”, a Saxon monk missionary who was the
first European Patron Saint of Germany and the Netherlands and was born here in 680 A.D.
He was accredited for bringing the first Christmas tree to England after felling the Oak Tree
of Thor at Geismar, and from the roots of that tree sprung a fir tree, which was claimed by St.
Boniface as the new Christmas symbol. The surrounding area has strong agricultural links
with glorious lush countryside, known for its famous red earth. To the southwest is
Dartmoor; to the north is Tiverton and Exmoor, to the east Exeter and to the west the
expanding Dartmoor edged town of Okehampton.
