- Business description
- “Beauty is a necessity.”
Our motto, “Beauty is a necessity”, means more to us than the enjoyment of beautiful things. We think everyone needs a personal refuge - and how sweet to create one in your own home! We enjoy equipping our friends to pursue the artful potential of a tranquil life.
Candy Apple Mercantile offers a refreshingly intimate shopping experience. The Mercantile snuggles inside one of the oldest and quaintest buildings in South Dayton, stuffed to its sky-blue tin ceiling with nostalgic and needful items for gift giving and beautifying the home.
For adventuresome souls, we have free maps, highlighting the shop locations of our Amish neighbors.
- General information
- Years established:2 for shop; 20 for apartments.
- Employees: 3
- Trading hours: Thurs - Sun 12:00-6:00pm
- Real Estate:
- Living accomodation:Second floor has 5 one-bedroom apartments; first floor has shop and an office space.
- Location:Pine St is the main street in the business section of this small town.
- Expansion potential: The building is a space - 45' X 90' total - one half of which is the shop on the first floor. There is plenty of room for expansion.
- Competition / Market:Candy Apple Mercantile will provide an imaginative and highly pleasurable shopping experience for people who are weary of the rushed, impersonal service of the “big box” stores. We also anticipate several spin-offs from this central hub within our first year of business. Among these are: * Classes and trainings held in the shop after hours, including special perks. We have already contacted several local artists – painters, calligraphers, sculptors, quilters -who are eager to teach workshops. These are some of our original plans: Rhonda is a freelance writer, and will lead writing workshops. Cindy is New York State certified to offer trainings required by the state for mental health/drug dependency workers. Working with the nearby restaurants the South Dayton Hotel and The Mustardseed, we plan to offer these trainings either in a reserved (and comfy) space in the back of our shop or in one of the six apartments in the building. We may also offer support group functions in off-hours. Cindy has many connections through her profession. Bearing in mind that we do need to make a profit, these will be more of a seminar nature than traditional weekly gatherings. We envision family game nights led by an American Indian gamesman and story circles for children. We’re especially excited about plans for therapeutic adult story-circles. Many of these off-hour functions will require a fee, but some will be offered free as a community service. Our ideas in this area reflect our desire to love people and improve our community. •An online store where our baskets and many of our gift items will be sold and our consignment pieces can be showcased. Here we will also post our operating hours and our quarterly newsletter, “Apple Blossoms” along with photographs and news of local happenings and various orts of information that we think our friends would enjoy. * A line of natural creams and salves developed by Cindy - another thing to make Candy Apple Mercantile unique. Cindy has been experimenting with natural creams and salves for years, carefully researching the science behind the ingredients and testing them on her bemused family. She has researched the laws pertaining to the manufacture and sale of such items. These will also prove useful for our gift baskets. * A large variety of made-to-order gift baskets, available in the Mercantile or by special order through our website. For an additional cost, we will ship our baskets to any address in the continental U.S. We are currently learning the skills required to create glorious and sturdy gift baskets and expect this to become a serious side-business, especially as we make the service available online. We realize that a small town gift shop alone would be hard pressed to turn a profit. We believe that the diversity of ventures within the business, along with savvy advertising, will offset the slower season from January to March. We are actively pursuing bus tour groups, and there is a good possibility that a steam engine train full of tourists will be stopping just across the way on a regular basis. We also plan to work with Aim High Cabins in nearby Leon, the gorgeous Cherry Creek Inn and a new dude ranch-style B&B opening soon in South Dayton to offer country vacation packages.
- Support & training:Rhonda and Cindy will train and help as long as is necessary.
- Reasons for selling:Doug died in February and we no longer can do it.
