Business description

Founded in 1994, Midnight Software Inc. developed a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program named DeltaCad (see www.deltacad.com for details). One of the main design goals was ease of use and quick to learn. Virtually all other CAD programs are hard to use and have a very steep learning curve. DeltaCad is truly easy to use. We have sold it to Kindergartners and MIT graduates.

The program has been very successful. The Windows version of DeltaCad is currently being sold exclusively on the Internet. We have sold over 200,000 copies, and it has been sold in virtually every English speaking country in the world (and many non-English countries).

The business has always been focused on software development, but at this point in time it really needs to focus on marketing. The owner has a great deal of software experience, but almost no experience in marketing and sales. DeltaCad has basically just been listed on search engines and been sold on the Internet.

DeltaCad has an enormous potential for growth with a company that can properly market it, so I believe that DeltaCad is ready to move up to the next level of marketing and advertising, but the existing owner does not have the experience to do that.

The Windows version of DeltaCad is currently sold as either a download only, or a download and CDROM. The website is integrated with an On-Demand CDROM producer, so when someone orders a CD, the web server sends all the info to the On-Demand producer to ship the CD. So basically, there is no day to day effort needed for sales of the product. The software manual is shipped as a manual.pdf file to allow the user to view the manual online, or to print it. It is also set up with another On-Demand printer for those who want a real printed manual. The business used to produce real CDROM's and real printed manuals, so it had to maintain a large inventory to keep prices low, but now with the advent of On-Demand producers that is not needed. So the business currently has no inventory and very small overhead. This makes profits and sales virtually identical. The only day to day work needed is a small amount of time to answer tech. support e-mails.

In September 2011 we released a Mac version of DeltaCad, and it is being sold exclusively through the Apple Mac App Store. Much to our surprise, the sales of the Mac version are exceeding the Windows sales by a factor of about 3 times. DeltaCad is usually listed in the Top Grossing section of the Apple Mac App Store. This reenforces our opinion that the Windows version is being under marketed. The good news is Microsoft is planning on opening an App Store, in the Fall of 2012, for Windows programs. If DeltaCad does as well at the Microsoft App Store as it does at the Apple Mac App Store, the Windows sales should grow enormously.

DeltaCad has a lot of potential for expansion for an owner willing to invest the time and effort.
Sell DeltaCad in the Microsoft App Store, when available.
Improve DeltaCad and sell upgrades to current users.
Translate DeltaCad into other languages.
Create better symbol libraries, and sell as a separate product.
Use DeltaCad as a starting place for other custom CAD applications.
Market DeltaCad to schools, or other groups, who would purchase large quantities. Most of our quantity sales are to schools.
