The Grand Union Canal stretches for some 137 miles from London through to Birmingham boasting some wonderful pubs and inns along the way. Just outside Milton Keynes, with some justification lies one of the very best waterside pubs not only on the Grand Union but through out the entire country. The pub was quite rightly voted as amongst the top 10 waterside pubs in the country by the Sunday Telegraph in 2009.Thrupp Wharf Marina is a friendly family run marina situated on the Grand Union Canal, adjacent to the Navigation Inn. It is conveniently located in South Northamptonshire between Castlethorpe and the affluent village of Cosgrove and Yardley Green at Bridge 64, just 10 minutes north of Milton Keynes. At Thrupp Wharf Marina 60 secure private moorings are provided in a peaceful country setting. With easy access from major routes and close proximity to the pub and shops the marina provides the perfect base for cruising the canal network. The history of the locale goes back pre Roman Times and the settlement was mentioned in the Domesday Book , the Roman Road of Watling Street runs nearby. Some address’s describe the pub as Northamptonshire and others Buckinghamshire. From M1 Southbound , leave at J15 and turn right onto A508 towards Stony Stratford, follow the road for approx 5 miles, turn left towards Cosgrove then after 100 yds left again towards Castlethrope, the pub is on front of you. From m1 Northbound, exit at J14, turn right onto A509 towards Newport Pagnell, at the next roundabout turn left and follow road for approx 4 miles until the A5. Right onto A5 and at next roundabout turn right onto A508 towards Northampton, then take 2nd turning right towards Cosgrove the left towards the pub.
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION
Built in 1805 of local stone by the “Navvies” cutting the canal through from Birmingham to London the pub was constructed for the comfort of the Irish workforce and horses that pulled the narrow boats of the period, on Bridge 64 and commands a large imposing detached footprint to the front of Thrupp Wharf, a privately owned and run marina which opened in 2009. Surrounded by the most pleasant of English countryside with villages and market Towns such as Towcester (Silverstone F1 GP Track) and many historic attractions makes this a magnet for tourists and well healed locals. Mentioned within many guides including The Good Pub Guide the pub has what is rumoured to be the original “take away”……, a hatch to the canal from the pubs kitchens to pass food through to the passing bargees. Enter from the wide footpath from Bridge 64 into a classic canal side hostelry with exposed reclaimed hard floor surfaces to the BAR (22+) having a large welcoming brick fireplace with beamed insets, lots of timber features including retention beams . Furnishings are simple with assorted tables leather seats and settees. CENTRAL BAR SERVERY has a host of Real Ale Wickets (Camra recommended) set into a polished counter top. DINING ROOM (28c) of similar rustic finish and leads out to the balcony area. CONSERVATORY (50c) over looking the canal and Marina with panoramic views over the sweeping countryside and wild life.
