The Echo is dry berthed on concrete foundations alongside the Victoria Domain in the Picton Marina. She is accessible by car or foot from the Town Centre and is situated beside several popular walking tracks on the Domain.
The Echo was the last ship plying commercially under sail in New Zealand waters. She has now been refurbished to serve as a Café and Bar business within the Picton Marina Precinct.
The Echo was built in 1905 as a topsail schooner with a Hercules oil engine of 30 hp. Large centerboards were lowered to prevent leeward drift when sailing. For most of her life she sailed back and forth across Cook Strait between Blenheim and Wellington. In 1942, she was requisitioned by the US Army as a supply ship for the New Hebrides and New Guinea area. Her war service was the theme of a Hollywood film released in 1961 called "The Wackiest Ship in the Army."
Picton, near the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, is surrounded by steep hills and enjoys superb views of forested mountains rising from the sea. The town with its equitable climate is more like a tourist seaside village with shops, tourist facilities and accommodation.
Picton Harbour and neighbouring Waikawa Bay both have extensive marinas for smaller craft. The Marlborough Sounds offer fantastic sailing, fishing and boating adventures along with secluded beachfront holiday homes.
Picton is the nearest centre to the famous Queen Charlotte Track, an easy 5-day walk along Queen Charlotte Sound with hostel and hotel accommodation available.
